Providing customers with sufficient, safe, high-quality drinking water at a reasonable cost is becoming increasingly challenging. Stringent regulations, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act, emerging health and source safety threats, aging infrastructure, and legislative and regulatory initiatives are just some of the complex issues facing water suppliers today.
Metcalf & Eddy has provided planning, analysis, design and construction management for water treatment, storage, transmission, and distribution systems for nearly a century. Our track record on pipeline projects ranges from replacement of 5,000 feet of 12-inch diameter pipe in the small Massachusetts coastal town of Ipswich to over 52 miles of new pipeline in the Chicago suburbs, with diameters up to 90 inches. Our pump station work ranges from facilities with 50-gpm pneumatic ejectors, to those with 100-mgd units. We have completed approximately 100 new or upgraded treatment plant design projects in the last 50 years, ranging from less than 1-mgd to over 400-mgd. In the last ten years alone, we have designed over 20 treatment plants, either new facilities or upgrades to existing ones.
Membrane treatment technologies are a fast-growing area of M&E specialization. We recently completed design of the first membrane facility in New England, treating brackish water for potable use.
