Upgrade of Brandywine Water Treatment Plant

Client: City of Wilmington, Delaware

Following studies and pilot testing, M&E is upgrading the 12-mgd plant and increasing its capacity to 20-mgd through the installation of immersed ultrafiltration membranes, new rapid mix and flocculation, a new clearwell, a new finished water pumping station, and new chemical feed and electrical systems. Processes considered during the study phase included Actiflo, DAF, and membranes. In addition, M&E evaluated the feasibility and cost of providing ozonation or UV for disinfection in the event that membranes were not used.

M&E has recently also completed a study on the feasibility of adding reverse osmosis capabilities to this plant. New RO facilities would permit the use of brackish surface waters, providing additional supplies during droughts and helping ensure continued regional growth and economic development.

M&E services to date have included:

  • Treatment plant evaluation
  • Process piloting
  • Preliminary plant upgrade design
  • Desalination feasibility study
